Use the library catalog's Advanced Search screen to search for a general topic such as literary criticism about a specific author.

1) In the 1st search box, enter the author's last name followed by the first name; for example, "Shakespeare William."
 * Change "all of these" to "as a phrase" in the drop-down menu.
 * Change "Keyword Anywhere" to "Subject" in the drop-down menu.

2) In the 2nd search box, enter the word "criticism."
 * Keep "all of these" as the choice in the drop-down menu.
 * Change "Keyword Anywhere" to "Subject" in the drop-down menu.

For most authors, you will find a reasonable number of results (under 150).  For authors such as Shakespeare, your search will result in too many choices.  For help in limiting your search, contact the librarian on duty through Ask a Librarian or email the subject librarian via the Research Guide for English.
